Boat Share

Who is this for?

The SOSA Boat Share program is for experienced sailors who are keen to go sailing but may not have their own boat. It could also be for you if you are looking to become more well rounded on a variety of different boats.

This program is not intended to replace our sailing courses. You must be comfortable with all aspects of general sailing (rigging, launching, boat handling, righting from capsize, crew overboard, etc.) as you will be responsible for doing this all on your own without supervision.

What boats do you have?

  • ILCA 7 (Laser) dinghy – 1 person
    • This is an ubiquitous dinghy sailboat known the world over. It is a single handed athletic boat that is known for it’s relative simplicity and striking depth of techniques required to sail this well.
  • 420 dinghy – 1-2 person
    • This is a two-handed fiberglass boat with main and jib sails and is outfitted with trapeze lines for those windier days. This boat is used in our sailing lessons while still offering lots to fine tune for those who are intermediate to advanced sailors.
  • Hobie 16 catamaran – 1-2 people
    • This is the classic. This best-seller has lightweight fiberglass asymmetrical hulls paired with a main sail and fully battened jib sail along with trapeze lines. This can be sailed by 1-2 adults and provides many thrills and for beginners and experts alike.

Please remember that these boats are SOSA owned and should be treated like you would your own. Please let us know right away of any required maintenance items so we can address it quickly.

For your safety, life-jackets with whistles attached must be worn anytime you are on the water.

How much does it cost?

We offer this program as an additional $200 add-on for our current members. We also offer a $100 discount to those who have gone through one of our Cansail lessons in the same year. Please contact the membership director for a discount code that can be used during sign up. New members can sign up for the boat share via our new member registration page:

If you are an existing member who has already paid their membership fees, please contact the membership director to receive a special link to sign up.

How do I go sailing?

A skills assessment is needed for each type of boat (Dinghy or Catamaran) you are wanting to sail. Please contact our Commodore to arrange for an assessment. Members who have completed and passed our Cansail 2 (or above) classes are automatically certified for sailing the dinghy boats.

Once you have been certified, you will receive an email with a password to allow access to the booking page. You can reserve a boat in one of our 3 hour blocks starting from 9am until 6pm/dusk. Please use the link below to book a time slot with one of our boats.

We kindly ask that you only book a maximum of 2 blocks per day (6 hours total) to ensure everyone has a chance to use the boats. If, for whatever reason, you cannot make your booked time, please cancel it as soon as you can via the link in your confirmation email. At the end of your time block, please spare enough time to come into shore and pack up the boat before the end of your time.

Sailing is a very weather dependent sport and carries inherent risks. You should always use your best judgement (weather forecast, webcam, clouds, lake conditions, air and water temperature, etc.) to decide if you have the skills, ability, and confidence to go out. It is much better to skip a day of sailing than to put yourself and others at risk by going out in marginal conditions.
