2022 Sailing Lessons

Courses are offered for all ages and all levels of sailing. Learn to sail in our fleet of Bugs, Picos, Optimists, Bytes, Lasers, and 420’s. We have programs for beginners of all ages, as well as our new Extended Program which is designed for sailors and aspiring sailors who want a full day, more intense sailing experience.

SOSA members can get a discount of $10 per course. If you are a member and want a discount code, contact the membership director.

What to bring to sailing classes:

  • PDF or life jacket
  • Appropriate clothing – beach shorts, sun tops, hat, change of clothes, rain gear. Tech fabrics (polyester, lycra, etc) or wool are good fabrics when they get wet. Cotton is not recommended.
  • Appropriate footwear that does not come off in the water – crocs, water shoes, or canvas sneakers
  • Snack or lunch
  • Water bottle
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Towel

Courses Descriptions

Wet Feet

Wet Feet is a program designed for young sailors who are just starting out. During the one-week course, sailors will learn how to balance, sit, and move in sailing dinghies in a fun and safe environment. The course will teach the basics of steering, boat handling, and knot tying. Sailors will learn how to act safely around boats as well as have fun playing games, swimming, and going on short field trips. This course aims to allow participants to gain comfort on the water and to introduce sailing as a sport for life.

CANSail 1

CANSail 1 is an introductory sailing course. During the one-week course, sailors learn to steer, handle sails, capsize their boats, and tie knots while under the watchful eye of our certified coaches. CANSail 1 is intended for sailors 12 and older. Sailors as young as 10, with some previous experience, will be considered for this program.
** All CANSail Weekly Courses run Monday – Friday including statutory holidays.

CANSail 2

CANSail 2 builds on the skills sailors learned in CANSail 1. During this one-week, full day course, sailors will learn more advanced skills, including how to adjust to the wind, boat handling manoeuvres, and on-the-water safety. These skills are delivered in a fun and controlled environment.
Prerequisite: CANSail 1

CANSail 1 Evening

This course, designed for adults who want to learn to sail a dinghy, is offered one evening a week. During this course, sailors will learn how to steer, handle sails, capsize their boats, and tie knots. This course also teaches how to be safe on the water, all while under the watchful eyes of our certified coaches.
Ages: All ages

CANSail 2 Evening

This course, designed for adults who want to build on their dinghy skills learned is CANSail 1, is offered one evening a week. During this course, sailors will further their sailing skills, boat handling manoeuvres, and confidence on the water. Two optional weekend days will be offered.

NEW THIS YEAR

Extended Sailing Beginner

Extended Sailing Beginner is a fun intensive, full day, one-week course which is designed to consolidate skills and increase sailors’ confidence. This course allows sailors to gain experience and work on their skills to work towards their CANSail levels in a flexible and fun environment. This course is for sailors aged 10 and older. Sailors as young as 8 would be considered if they can demonstrate prior experience. The Extended Sailing program also includes optional racing on Thursday evenings and Sundays using the SOSA boats with coach support. CANSail 1 and 2 may be achieved though this program.
Ages: 10 and older (beginner) or 8 and older (experienced)

Extended Sailing Advanced

Extended Sailing Advanced is a course for advanced sailors looking for more on the water time. This is an opportunity to achieve CANSail 3 or 4. Sailors who are confident in their abilities and wanting a more intense experience can also benefit from the program. Sailors will get the opportunity to have individualized coaching as they work on their sailing skills. This course will focus on racing and the course will be tailored to each sailor’s personal goals. The Extended Sailing program also includes optional racing on Thursday evenings and Sundays using the SOSA boats with coach support. Sailors aiming to achieve their CANSail 3 or 4 should sign up for two weeks.
Prerequisite: CANSail 1 or demonstration of equivalent ability
